Maggie Brown
Her uncle, or whatever twisted version John had created of him, was still in front of her, but she would no longer react to him. With her eyes so tightly squeezed closed, you would need a crowbar to release them, then maybe an entire team of tradies, she shook down to her knees. She tried to crumple forward, tried to lock her face against the watery floor beneath her, but her uncle was there for every step of the way. He still gripped her cheek, and let her tell you, it was a Hell of a lot less kind now. Sheâd never remembered her uncleâs fingers terminating in claws, but they were so sharp right now, he could scratch right through concrete in a second or two.
âYouâre an abomination, Maggie. You always were. I pitied you. Thatâs it.â
âYou loved me. And if it werenât for your love and advice, I wouldnât have gotten this far.â
âNow itâs time to get further. I know your deepest wish, Maggie. You just want to be normal.â
âI just want to be free of this mess so I can explore the rest of my life with Luc,â she blurted, meaning it right down from the center of her soul. There was a slight problem there, though. While she hadnât heard any other noises but this constant drip, drip of the blood and her uncleâs snarled responses, now something erupted out from behind her, and she heard the very specific sound of demon wings swooshing.
She twisted. She finally opened her eyes. Her uncle tried to dart forward, or whatever the Hell he was, and tried to wrap his claws around her face to get her to stare into his eyes, but Luc was right there. And this enormous grin spread over his blood-streaked, bruised face. âYou canât take that back, Maggie. Not ever. Turns out youâre just as lascivious as I expected. And donât worry. Weâll get around to exploring each other real soon.â
How he could spit all of that out in such a timely fashion, half a second before he reached her, whipped his tail to the left, and threw her uncle off, Maggie didnât know. She didnât need to know, either. All she had to do was let her heart leap at the sight of Luc. It wasnât just her heart. She could feel the seat of the Vessel in her mind. Itâd always been there, between her brows, not of course that she had been aware of it until two weeks ago. But now it felt like it spread throughout her whole body. You know that void sheâd told you of previously? That hole in her heart sheâd been trying to fill her entire life with fantasies of a different life altogether? Now it filled itself.
She wanted to wrap her arms around his neck, wanted to draw him close, and though it was strange, wanted to smell him. What would he smell of? Brimstone and hellfire? Not exactly. Sweat and a little blood, but underneath, just Luc.
